Sales of digital music downloads may be showing the first signs of leveling off, as two new reports indicate week-to-week sales are stagnating -- and sometimes declining -- this year. "The hyper-growth period is gone," said MarcFreedman, digital media analyst at the Diffusion Group in Plano, Texas. "Like any new offering, there is a period of fast growth, but then you reach penetration of the market."

Apple Computer launched a pay-per-download online music service yesterday, plunging into an unproven business while attempting to broaden its consumer appeal. The new service sells music downloads for 99 cents and has the blessing of all five major record labels. It also has some songs that, to date, have not been offered by rival music sites,
but about a girl "who didn't talk to cheeses."
